Research Focus
The major focus of my research is in three areas. First, my research has focused on the refining and expanding of the language-based communication zone models which I developed and published in 1996, 2001, and 2007.
The second area of my research focus has been on the communication behaviors of Hong Kong bilinguals participating in intercultural and intra-cultural decision-making meetings. One of the articles derived from this area of research received an Outstanding Article Award in the Journal of Business Communication in 2007.
The third research focus has been the application of the action-learning cycle in the interconnectedness of teaching and research in business/ management and organizational communication so as to have a wider impact on the global academic professional community.
Since my appointment at City University of Hong Kong in 1994, I have received funding for 36 research projects, including from the Hong Kong Government-funded General Research Fund (GRF) and Action Learning Projects; Strategic Research Grants; the Teaching Development Fund; and FHS / CHASS Research Grants. The following list gives my areas of research focus and related publications which have appeared in international refereed journals:
§ Language-based communication zones models; Organizational and management communication in multinational corporations. Eight Articles dealing with the conceptual and theoretical framework of this line of research have been published in Journal of Business Communication, Management Communication Quarterly, and Journal of Asia-Pacific Communication and edited books.
§ Intercultural or international business communication. Seven Articles dealing with perspectives on teaching intercultural business communication have been published in Intercultural Communication Studies, Business Communication Quarterly, and Journal of Asia-Pacific Communication.
